Camp for climate action 2007: Events this week...

Preparations for the camp for climate action 2007 are underway! Come and get involved right here in Manchester with other people interested in taking action against the root causes of climate change. This week there will be a neighbourhood meeting for anyone who wants to get involved in the 2007 camp, as well as local actions and events(wednesday), and a film screening for those who want to find out more about the 2006 camp (friday).

Her name is Gina Khachatryan and she is being held with her husband VAHAN and daughter ELEN. The Home Office officials took them from Blandford Road, Salford in the early hours of Easter Monday, 9th April. They closed off the street and gave them 30 minutes to pack a few clothes. They are to be deported on Friday at 10.50 on flight KM101 to Malta, then on to Moscow and Armenia

The South African state is trying to smash the shackdwellers movement. They are highly militant and have done a lot of great things since they started about 2 years ago. Now 5 of the comrades are in prison on trumped up charges of murder. They stand to spend 2 years awaiting trial in one of the most horrible prisons in South Africa. If comrades in different countries could fax the South African embassies in your country, calling for the release of the Kennedy 5, this might help. Also, the committee has included an email address of someone in the unit that investigates the police (ICD) and are calling for emails to him.

What is successful action?

In the run-up to this year's G8 summit and Climate Camp (among other things), it seems timely to ask ourselves what we do (and why we do it), and how we can do it better. Affinity groups? Civil disobedience? Mass blockades? Street stalls and petitions? Demonstrations? Lobbying? And how does what we do relate to the sort of world we want? Can we create that world now? Where do social centres, like the CommonPlace, fit into this?

The demonstration today ( 4th April 2007) outside the Dallas Court Reporting Centre in Salford Quays was unique in the sense that several other nationalities were there to show their solidarity with Sudanese people seeking asylum in the UK and instructed to report to the Home Office authorities day. Darfur is not safe and neither is Khartoum – that is why people are seeking protection in the UK
